1950 to 1963
The feminine ideal is Marilyn Monroe and the hourglass
figure. In 1961, the "Jackie look" sweeps in, as Americans emulate
a fashionable young First Lady who likes the easy architectural fit of
designers such as Balenciaga. The prevailing silhouette follows the body's
natural curves while concealing it: a slim sheath, a matching short jacket
with three-quarter sleeves, a pillbox hat on the back of the head, small
pumps and white gloves. It won't make waves at the P.T.A.
